About The Winemaker

oregonwinemaker_marcus Welcome! Matello (rhymes with cello) is an Italian word meaning “little fool”. I've always had an affinity for jesters and fools, and it seems to be a bit of a totem. Whether it suits the winery or we suit the fool is beyond me, perhaps a bit of both.

We make sommelier friendly wines, focused on Pinot Noir, flirting with Syrah(from the Willamette Valley), and balancing the red wines with pretty mineral driven white wines. My favorite compliment is "delicious!" but I will take any that come our way.

I pride myself on being a bit of a throwback in the cellar. There is an old French axiom that says “tradition is an experiment that worked”. At Matello our goal is to try to think outside the box of modern winemaking by exploring the methods of tradition. Renewing focus on the most basic aspects of winemaking: grapes, farming, fermentation, and patience. All Matello wines are produced from small family owned and operated vineyards and from non-irrigated vines.

The first Matello vintage was 2002 starting with 186 cases; now Matello production is almost 2200 cases.
